We may be getting to the end of winter, but now is the time to start asking: will your furnace be good for another year? Or, is this the year you need a new furnace?
Signs You May Need a New Furnace
No one want to throw away money on a good furnace, but your system may not have a lot of useful life left if:
- It’s more than 15 years old
15 years is useful life of most furnaces. After that, most manufacturer’s warranties expire and it’s harder and harder to find parts. Repair costs can quickly become more expensive than a new unit. - It is making loud noises
Your furnace is a machine, and machines make noise. But if you are hearing loud clinks, bangs or frequent cycling on/off, these may be the death throes of your furnace. - Your utility bills increased from last year
Take out last year’s utility bills or login to look at energy consumption last winter. If your bills have increased, that may be a sign that your furnace is losing efficiency. Continuing with the same furnace may just make those utility bills continue to climb. - You are spending a lot on annually on maintenance
In many cases, repairs are less expensive than replacement, but if you are spending 30% of the cost of a new furnace (or more) on furnace repairs in a year, it will be more cost-effective to invest in a new system.
